Something we don’t see very often in this sport are innovative designs that stray a bit from the norm. Japanese designer Taro Tamai has been designing hand-made boards for over a decade. An answer to the homogenization of board shapes that happened as snowboarding gained mainstream appeal.
Tamai’s goal is no less than to “perfectly blend into the terrain miraculously made of snow and wind, just as if birds flying in the sky or fish flowing in the stream.” The end product of his philosophical approach to the sport is a line of boards renowned for their flexible fins, oversized sized fish tails and ride-ability in almost any snow condition.” More information on these special boards at Gentemstick Snowboards.

Burton x FYi x Fragment Design AK457 Guide Jacket

Burton Japan, FYi, and Fragment Design have merged forces to work on a joint collaboration project to develop high end technical outerwerar. The result is the [ak] 457 jacket, which can be best described as technical equipment for mountain enthusiasts. It’s the most functional and technically developed outerwear coming out of the Burton camp, and for now it’s only available in Japan.

Adam Weiss / Landscape Studio for Burton
Some great design work for the current line up of Burton Snowboard packaging conceptualized and designed by Adam Weiss of Landscape Studio, with Illustrations done by Travis Millard. The packaging redesign encompassed Burton’s entire product offering: boot/binding boxes, board labels, outerwear hangtags and accessory boxes. The aesthetic was later carried over into all communications for the brand.

Timorous Beasties for Nike ACG Capsule Collection

Beastin’
For its 20th anniversary this year, Timorous Beasties, a design studio from Glasgow Scotland, has collaborated with Nike ACG to create a capsule collection of jackets and soft-goods featuring their signature style of visual imagery in a limited run.

For this collection, Timorous Beasties have merged traditional 19th century motifs with designs of the day to create an interesting pattern that compliments itself well. This graphic has been applied to a Nike ACG TB Vertical Shell BK Jacket, in both black and blue colorways, and feature fully taped seams and a wind and waterproof lightweight shell that utilizes the ACG Storm-Fit technology.

Nike Snowboarding 2011 Boot Preview

New Kicks
With SIA this past weekend, there was an opportunity to see much of what is coming down the pipes gear-wise for next year’s riding season. This current season saw the introduction of this technical boot from Nike Snowboarding, released with an ACG inspired colorway as a throwback from the archives of Nike. What we see coming in 2011 for the Zoom Air Kaiju is no different, as Nike likes to use their resources to add to the aesthetics of these boots. This time around there is an obvious poke at the tech challenge tennis sneakers from the Agassi days, as well as one that touches more on the color palette made famous by late 80’s Jordans. For snowboarders that are also sneaker heads, and for those with taste, next season is looking good to pick up a pair of Kaijus.

Next season also sees the introduction of a pro model for Nike Snowboarding. Headliner Danny Kass will also receive his own pro model boot, both in purple and red colorways. Minimal looking compared to the ZF1, and a throwback style 70’s swoosh on the side. More info as it comes from SIA.

Mr. Jago for Endeavor Snowboard Design

Live Series Boards & Bindings
We gave you a first look at Endeavor Snowboard Design’s 2011 lineup the other day, now we have a better look at the Live Series, done up by Bristol artist Mr. Jago. The Live Series has always been a show piece for Endeavor. In keeping with this style, they chose to use the Live as Mr. Jago’s canvas for 2011. Having worked with such brands as Addict and Rossignol, and having exhibited his work around the world, it’s clear that his collaboration with Endeavor is a great match. Going to his studio in Bristol, Endeavor selected nine pieces of work from Mr. Jago’s portfolio and photographed them to be used as the graphics for this series of boards and also as the inaugural graphics for the forthcoming Live Series binding.

One of the brands that I am most interested in seeing year after year is Vancouver Canada’s own Endeavor Snowboard Design. Coming into their 8th season in 2011 and looking to drop an impressive catalog of both hardware and softwear products, Endeavor is still hitting strong with their attention to detail and collaborations with some of the world’s best artists. Mr. Jago, Hydro74, Vince Chan and Derek Stenning are only a handful of the artists that have done work with Endeavor for 2011. New for next season are two models of bindings to round it all out and complete your kit. Keep your eyes out for these!

We had the opportunity to talk with him about his style, influences, action sports and what’s next on his list of big things to do for 2010.

Matt W. Moore is the founder of MWM Graphics, a Design and Illustration studio based in Portland, Maine. Matt works across disciplines, from colorful digital illustrations in his signature “Vectorfunk” style, to freeform watercolor paintings, and massive aerosol murals. MWM exhibits his artwork in galleries all around the world, and collaborates with clients in all sectors. Matt is also Co-Founder & Designer for Glyph Cue Clothing.

To start things off for those that might not know who you are, what’s your background and how did you get started in the design world?
I’ve always known design and art were my path in life. After high school I traveled for a few years and then attended college classes at RISD, SCAD, and MECA. My schooling was well rounded in Traditional Art and Illustration, Graphic Design and New Media, and I even took some classes in Marketing and Copy Writing. After college I worked as a Designer/Art Director at VIA, and then moved to Vermont to work for Burton Syndicate (Burton’s in-house Creative Department). Two years ago I took the plunge into running MWM Graphics full time, but I’ve been freelancing all along since I was a teen.

Do you have a creative method or process?
I am very process oriented. Each project requires a new perspective and approach, but there are a few underlying principles that remain constant regardless of the desired end result. I strive to be original, unique, progressive, and always deliver the appropriate visual solution. Sometimes a project requires more of an artistic flare, while other times a thoughtful and simple graphic approach is best. I am a strong believer in “Practice Makes Perfect.” and “Range Is Conducive To Growth.”

You got to work with K2 to design a limited edition Astar snowboard, how did this come about and what was the overall concept for this project?
About 2 years ago Cory at K2 hit me up to design a line of 4 graphics that celebrated the 4 seasons. We went for a cohesive nature inspired series, lots of trees, icicles, zig-zag flow, constellations, mountains, and other abstracted environments. Each design had a different color palette, but they remained super cohesive as a series. In the end, some things changed and only one of the graphics made it into the 2010 Line. I have my fingers crossed that the other 3 will be actualized next year. Everyone who has seen the tech-pack is hyped on them!

What are your proudest achievements as a designer?
Tough question. I guess for me it is more about the sum of the parts than any single project. Each project informs the next, and I’m always thinking a few moves ahead. 2010 and 2011 will be epic. Every time I board an airplane on my way to an exhibition, lecture, or client meeting I get a huge smile thinking back to when it was all just a dream.

Who are your biggest influences?
I get asked this a lot, and it is tough to give a answer that doesn’t have huge gaps in it. I’m tuned into a lot of different stuff, past and present. The people who I find most inspirational are the ones who were and are truly ahead of their time. The creative people who need no introduction, and don’t need to sign their work. Folks who own their signature style. The Visionaries and Innovators.

How is your workspace looking?
Have you ever seen Beautiful Mind? You know that scene when he’s in his room with all sorts of random stuff taped and glued to the walls with strings connecting one thing to the next… Yeah, that’s what my studio looks like. Haha.

Can you talk us through a typical day?
Wake. Coffee. Emails. More Coffee. More Emails. Lunch. Long bike ride around The Bay (or gym session in the Winter). Client Projects all afternoon (and often evening). Dinner and chill time with my girl. Latenight Studio (Personal Work, Art, Painting, Etc.) Deep Sleep. Repeat.

What’s next on your list of things to do?
Off to Paris on Thursday for a month preparing for my Solo-Exhibition at SINCE.upian. Hyped for this! A whole lot more stuff I can’t speak on right now, but tune into the MWM NEWS BLOG : http://mwmgraphics.blogspot.com and I’ll keep you updated as all MWM stuff happen and new product collabos drop.

Any plans to work on other snowboarding or action sport projects in the future?
Yes. For sure. I have lists upon lists of ideas for Skate/Snow/Surf. I absolutely love working in this sector. It is my playground as an Artist/Designer/Illustrator. Get at me!

Any last words or shout outs?
Big UP to my family, friends, supporters, collaborators, and wonderful girlfriend Rhi. I’ve never been so excited for the future as I am now. Daps to The KDU, ROJO Global, PSFK, FormatMag, WUT Graffiti Crew, and everyone else I hang and work with. 2010 will be fresh!

K2 Snowboarding x Original Penguin

ISAORA is adding some new flavor to the current snowboard outerwear industry with their approach to design and regard for style and technology. Their current season’s collection launch video was a joint effort between W+K agency’s Attack faction, director Shinichi Maruyama, and music produced by MNDR, and is simply mind-blowing. Burton USA 2010 Olympic Uniforms

Olympic Style
Burton unveiled thier team uniforms for the United States Snowboard Team to be worn at the 2010 Olympic Games that will be held in Vancouver BC this Winter. The uniforms are a great mix of style with a bit of tradition thrown into the mix. According to the Burton designers: “This time around we gave the “kits” a very classic American style (jeans and flannels), and tried to put as much “snowboarding” into the uniform- which by definition is not very snowboardy. If the early season conditions of British Columbia are any indication, the riders probably wont need it, but we colab’ed with GORE-TEX on these to make sure they are the most awesome uniforms possible, both fashionable and functional.” Dope. Look for these this coming February on all the US National riders.

Oakley X Fragment Design O Frame Goggle

Hiroshi Fujiwara’s Fragment Design collaborated with Oakley to develop a special edition O Frame goggle for the Japanese market. The goggle comes in two colorways and sports a new Iridium lens with a green tint. The Fragment logo is present on the strap and etched into the lens as well. One of the most noticeable features is the motocross-inspired nosepiece for added protection against the elements. The goggles come in a special Fragment designed goggle case, and can be bought at the Honeyee online store for 23,100 yen.

Ride Qi Alpha Facemask Preview

Ride Qi might be a new name in the snowboard industry, but they definitely aim to bring innovation to the table with their product range. One of the unique things about their company is that they have a consumer-driven business model, by turning to the snowboarding community for their experience and expertise, Ride Qi aims to design and deliver products by riders for riders.

The end result of this research and development is their launch product, the Alpha Mask. The Alpha is a lightweight face mask that offers bandana-inspired style merged with the technical protection and functionality of traditional ski masks and balaclavas.

The Alpha Mask has some great features to it as well, namely a breathable perforated polyester layer that keeps ventilation unrestricted while offering plenty of coverage for the face and neck area, and ear straps that let you raise and lower it without having to retighten the velcro strap holding it all together. That and it looks pretty badass, which is always a welcomed bonus. Available in three colorways: red, blue, and yellow for at the Ride Qi webstore.

Flux x Elmcompany Super Titan Binding

A collaborative effort between FLUX Bindings and Elmcompany, better known for their great hat and apparel design, on a joint effort to produce a limited edition Super Titan binding. Each respective company did what they do best, with Elmcompany coming up with the concept and design and FLUX putting it all together. The binding features a clean aesthetic, a host of great features like hidden components and tool free hardware, and comes in black or white colorways. Grafik Armor Snowboard Decal Wraps

Ride’s Annual Snowboard Art Contest

Ride Snowboards is gearing up for another year of Snowboard Art Contest. Now in it’s 8th year, the contest kicks off November 18th, with art submissions due December 11th. This year there will be an online gallery with all submissions on display, and the top 30 and prize winners’ snowboard art from the contest will be on display at the TimesInfinity Gallery in Seattle for the entire month of February. REI teams up with Arbor Snowboards to put on a snowboard design contest this November.
Visitors to REI.com vote thumbs-up or thumbs-down on the contest entries. The top 5 vote-getters move into the final round on 1/10/10. Judges from Arbor will review the top 5 vote-getters and select the winner on 1/15/10. Arbor will build a snowboard featuring the winning design in fall 2010. It will be sold exclusively at REI. The winning designer will receive the board featuring their design and a $1,000 REI gift card. Four runners-up will each receive a $500 REI gift card.
